Although perhaps being portrayed a bit too heavily by Western media as a heart-warming rags-to-riches story (“disabled musicians living on the streets of Kinshasa are discovered by French film-makers and overcome the odds to produce a best-selling album and mount a world tour”), the Congolese band Staff Benda Belili have the musical oomph to back up their popularity, dishing out a sound that is fast-paced and joyful. A documentary of their story (by directors Florent de la Tullaye and Renaud Barret) played at Cannes this year – the trailer is available here, Daily Telegraph review here.
